Frequently Asked Questions for the Strengthened Senior High School Program of the Department of Education

1. What is the Strengthened Senior High School (SHS) Program?

The Strengthened SHS Program is part of the K to 12 Basic Education Program that enhances the SHS curriculum to better prepare students for higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, or skills development. It aims to align learning outcomes with industry needs and global standards. The Department of Education is strengthening the SHS program, anchored on the following goals:

    • Streamlining our tracks and subjects
    • Prioritizing student choice
    • Ensuring that student options are stackable and seamless
    • Making our learners employable

2. What are the Key Features of the Strengthened Senior High School Program?

  1. The core subjects were streamlined from 15 per semester to 5 per year to increase the time for the most essential topics. The key competencies from related core subjects have been merged, thus reducing the original 15 core subjects to just 5. These subjects will now be offered throughout the entire year of Grade 11 instead of being limited to a single semester. All SHS students are required to take the core subjects.
  2. Available subjects (electives) have been streamlined and updated. Subjects are grouped into clusters to help schools efficiently organize teachers and learning resources. However, clusters are not the same as strands because schools are not required to offer all electives within a cluster, and students can choose electives across multiple clusters.
  3. The time allotment for the core and electives has been revised to better meet the requirements of the curriculum.
  4. There will only be two tracks – Academic and TechPro.
  5. Choice of subjects will be based on the students’ preferred exit rather than pre-selected based on their tracks or strands.

3. Are schools required to offer both the Academic and the Technical Professional Pathways?

No, schools may opt to offer only one pathway. They will only offer the subjects and electives for which they have the teachers and appropriate learning resources.

4. When will the new curriculum be implemented?

Based on the initial results of the pilot, DepEd shall implement the new curriculum by SY 2026-2027.

5. Can students take any pathway in senior high school and eventually enroll in any college program?

Yes. Senior high school students may enroll in any SHS pathway and still pursue their preferred college program. However, choosing a pathway that is aligned or connected to their intended college course provides an advantage, as it helps them build the necessary foundation, knowledge, and skills for their chosen field.

6. What will CIIT SHS offer under the Strengthened Senior High School Program?

For SY 2026–2027, CIIT SHS will offer the Academic Track with access to TechPro electives through the Doorway Option Students will complete:

  • 5 Core Subjects
  • Academic Electives aligned to their preferred career pathway
  • Strategic TechPro electives

Example:

  • A future multimedia arts student may take Visual Graphic Design and Animation (NC III).
